Project: Butcher Block Table

I love Butcher Blocks. So, one of the first projects I made after I got my Woodworking setup was a Butcher Block table. The table was made to a custom size to fit in a space at my home office. Used mostly for my Computer and many Monitors.

The table was made from Hard Maple, an extremely hard wood.

Hard Maple is quite hard to cut and does not stain easily. Not the best wood to select for my first project. But I love the way it looks. And I only realized this is going to be a difficult project, after I purchased all the wood. To cut the wood I had to change blades on my table saw between crosscuts and ripcuts. To stain it. I put wood stain preconditioner. Danish Oil and Tung Oil were the best stains I liked on the hard Maple.

Here are the photos of the project. From start to finish.

I gave the table a Walnut Accent.

Since I glued up the butcher blocks of the the table as 2 separate halves. I planned to use dowel joints to connect them together. However the jointing ends weren’t perfectly aligned as the glue up made them shift. So I had some space in between the two halves of the table. I decided to cut a channel and fill up the empty space with Walnut. this would fix my issue and add some style to the table. This accent was made symmetrically on both sides of the table.
